The author's style is journalistic, and it is narrated from the point of view of a journalist, who is also somewhat involved in the proceedings he is reporting on. The narrator is a reporter for the newspaper that has sponsored the go match between the Master and Otake. He is a devoted amateur player himself who approaches his description of the actual play of the game with seriousness.

The events in the novel are actual events that the author actually did report on. All of the names except that of the Master have been changed for the novel. Since the novel is based on actual people and events, it seems that the narrator and the author share the same point of view.
