How is Jiro described in the opening chapters of the novel, The Master Puppeteer?

At the beginning of the story, Jiro is very unsure of himself. He is shy, often clumsy, and does not believe that he is worth much. He is afraid that he will fail at the theater because he will not be able to carry out his tasks with the skill and grace needed.
