Why do the Prince's guests avoid the seventh room in the story, The Masque of the Red Death?

The seventh room is decorated in black velvet and lit by the fire burning behind a redstained glass window. The effect of the red light, however, is "ghastly in the extreme," and as a result, the room is avoided by most of the guests.
