What does Rose tell French about her family?

Rose tells French that her parents were among the first captured, before they knew the extent of the danger. Rose says her father was not Native American, but was the “kind of Indian … from the warm oceans” (Location 907). She lived with her grandmother for a while, then two great-uncles took her when they realized they had to be on the move if they wanted to survive. One of the uncles had died, and then the other, leaving Rose on her own.
