In Chapter Seven, the group spends its first night at the Four Winds Resort. At the start of the evening, they each have their own room. Whereas French is old enough to living in the safety of his family's home during a time when they were not persecuted, most of the others have not. French sees the resort as luxurious, and he feels safe..... a break from tents and open land in the woods. Wab, however, didn't know safety.... her childhood wasn't protected.... it was unsafe, brutal. Thus, by the time French woke up the next morning, everyone was in his room., and most were in his bed. In context, this illustrates the way the group has become a family.... the way French is looked up to as a protector, a father figure. This also that each of the characters has become dependent upon the group as a whole.
