Why is Aaron's parentage a mystery in the novel, The Marriage of Opposites?

Aaron is introduced in the novel as a distant cousin of Rachel’s family, but in reality is the illegitimate product of a sexual union between a local Jewish girl and a black sailor. Aaron’s parentage has been hidden to protect all those involved.
