Money and politics is a recurring idea in the book. Many Americans believe that the greatest threat to American democracy is the dependence of candidates upon substantial financial backing in order to run their campaigns and the resultant pervasive influence that large donors have over those they have assisted in winning elections. Author Silva demonstrates this atmosphere to the extreme through the election of President Beckwith.
