What is the theme in The Man with the Golden Gun by Ian Fleming?

There are many references to gold. There is gold on both sides, defined principally by descriptions of Scaramanga's gun on the one hand and of Mary Goodnight on the other, who is repeatedly described as having "golden" hair and "golden" tones in her skin.
