What does Dave do instead of following his mother's directive in the story, The Man Who Was Almost a Man?

Dave buys the gun but doesn't go home right away as directed. Instead, he plays with the gun until he knows everyone has gone to sleep, and then he leaves for work early, taking the gun with him.
