Phantom limb syndrome occurs when individuals have lost a limb but still have the sensations typical of the limb. This produces the perception of a 'phantom limb'. The disadvantages of such a syndrome are obvious. Having false perceptions can be difficult, tricking one into poor navigation, and perhaps delaying psychological recovery from the loss of the limb.
