Hijuelos uses foreshadowing when one of the young Cubans Cesar is hosting tells Cesar how easy it would be to get lost in New York. When Cesar asks the young man if he means lost in spirit or in the streets.... the young man tells him that he means lost in spirit. This foreshadows the strong possibility that the young man will suffer the same fate as Nestor or Cesar whose own spirits were diminished by life in America.
