Over the course of the novel, Sachiko takes in her younger siblings (against tradition) and plays a major role in the family's decision making processs. She is outgoing, defers to her husband when necessary, and she perseveres when things get tough. There is a period, however, in which Sachiko finds herself having difficulty coping with her experiences, specifically, after she suffers a miscarriage that leaves her depressed and withdrawn.
