What is the difference between the atomic model of classical physics and Rutherford's model as noted in the nonfiction book, The Making of the Atomic Bomb?

The atomic model of classical physics is hard and round. Newton thinks of it as a billiard ball. Rutherford's model is a central attracting mass surrounded by rings of rotating electrons. The atom is substantially empty space.
