Exposition

The novel's exposition includes a description of Ian Malcolm's initial visit to Jurassic Park and the events that unfolded prior to the story (five years later). Due to rumors of strange animals washing ashore, Richard Levine convinces Malcolm to return to the island in order to study what he believes is a "lost world".
