The book is primarily set in Mosquitia, a region in Honduras, which is the site of T1 and T3. These are the areas explored by Preston and Steve Elkins as the potential site of the Lost City of the Monkey God. The area contains the thickest jungle in the world, and much of it is quite remote, as it is crossed by jagged chains of mountains. The rainforest area receives 10 feet of rain a year, and flash floods are common. The fauna include deadly snakes, jaguars, and monkeys. The area is remarkably remote.
