The Royal Geographical Society of London was created in 1830. It was instituted to create a map of the world based upon observation rather than imagination. Its mission statement stated that the Society would collect, compile, and print interesting facts and discoveries, have a library of the best books on geography, assemble the best surveying equipment, and help send explorers on their journeys.
