In The Lord of the Rings, the hobbits have to hide in the woods away from the road because a black rider appears behind them. They manage to hide and go undetected but this is the first time Frodo has had to deal with the feeling that he gets when the Ring Wraiths are nearby. He can feel the pull of the Ring, when they are near.
