When all of the hobbits, except Sam, fall asleep by the river, what does Sam discover about the trees?

In Lord of the Rings, in the earlier chapters, Sam is the only one who does not fall asleep by the river. When he comes back out of the woods to join up with his companions he finds that the trees by the river are alive and that they have begun the process of taking and eating (absorbing) his friends.
