Tom Bombadil, from Lord of the Rings, is an interesting character. We learn that he is extremey old, and predates most of the magic in the land. He remembers the first elves and dwarves to come onto the land. He teaches the hobbits a song and says that if ever they need him all they have to do is sing it and he will come.
