In Lord of the Rings Merry tells the others that the Old Forest was alive and aware, more than most. He says that the trees are throwing branches in their way, and tripping them with their roots. This is because a while ago the people in Buckland were afraid that the trees were going to come over the wall and so they took a few of the trees and burned them. The woods have been angry ever since.
