In The Lord of the Rings Frodo and the other hobbits are staying at the inn called The Prancing Pony. While they are there a quiet Ranger sits in the corner and observes them. Later, after Frodo has a disastrous evening, the Ranger, calling himself Strider, says that they must talk. Later that night, Strider comes to Frodo's room. The inn keeper brings up a letter which Frodo opens. It says that he is to trust Strider and do as he says.
