Dodge Anders is the son of the leader of the Millinery and is determined to become a Millinery member when he is older. However, when Redd attacks and kills Dodge, she not only takes away his dreams, but she leaves Dodge consumed with a need for revenge. Dodge spends the next thirteen years fighting with the Alyssians, a group of rebels. When Alyss returns, Dodge does all he can to help her success in her fight against Redd. In the end, however, Dodge's need for revenge is stronger than his loyalty to Alyss and he abandons her to engage with The Cat. In the end, both Dodge and Alyss appear to be successful, but it is unclear what has really happened to The Cat and Redd.
