Why does Garraty want to see Barkovitch in Chapter 14?

Garraty hears that one of Garraty's legs went stiff a while back. This suggests that Barkovitch might not have much time left. Either Garraty wants to verify this for himself or he wants to say his good-byes to Barkovitch.
