Why does Garraty think of Stebbins as the "lean Buddha"?

Stebbins remains in back of the pack, rarely joining in the conversation. In Garraty's eyes, Stebbins doesn't show the strain of the race. Instead, Stebbins knows: he has all the answers, like a Buddha-type character.
