Who is Peter McVries from The Long Walk and what is their importance?

McVries was originally an alternate but was pulled into the Long Walk only hours before it began. He is fifty-one years old and becomes Garraty's mentor and inspiration. In the end, Garraty leaves the group because he simply cannot walk anymore.
