Who is Sparky Enea from The Log from the Sea of Cortez and what is their importance?

Sparky Enea is one of the three-person crew of the Western Flyer. He is hired in Monterey to join the expedition to the Sea of Cortez. Sparky and Tiny grew up together in Monterey, and they are presented as inseparable. They are both successful fishermen, and the two provide fresh fish to the expedition while in Mexico. Unfortunately, their skills at navigation are hampered while fishing, and the boat tends to go off-course during their watches.
