Steinbeck observes that the state of the boat can be related to their owners and the way they are being taken care of, and even how the owners take care of themselves. If a boat is disorderly and rusting, the more likely the owner is disheveled and careless. On the other hand, a well-maintained boat will more than likely have an owner who is organized, efficient and in good shape.
