The Indigenous people of the Sea of Cortez are encountered in several remote locations. They live in lonely ranches or dwellings, usually with a canoe pulled up to it and a few inhabitants. These people usually paddle out to the boat to talk, do some trading, or merely observe the activities of the expedition party. Steinbeck comments on their timelessness, apparent peace, and the simplicity of their lives.
