What is the setting of The Lock Artist: A Novel by Steve Hamilton?

This novel is set in the real world of America during the last decade of the 20th century and the first decade of the 21st century. Mike's childhood occurs in Michigan, but his career as a boxman takes him to states across the country. Most of the characters in the novel are thieves who hire Mike for one or more jobs, and they gain wealth by robbing rich people.
