The spike is a symbol of the railroad. Abacus tells Ulysses that if wants to find his wife and son, he needs to carry a spike, a symbol of the railroad, with him until he finds a place where no one recognizes what the spike is used for. When Ulysses reaches that spot, he is to pound the stake into the ground.
