Personal identity is another theme. The central tension in this novel is one of identity: True Son struggles to find his place while caught between the wild, free ways of the Lenni Lenape and the foreign, structured world of the whites from which he originated. He struggles with the fact that he has traits of both societies; for example, he is quick to inform Del that his "white" skin is in fact quite dark.
