Del Hardy is happy when they reach Fort Pitt after the long journey through Indian country. He is cheered by the presence of roads, cleared land, houses and barns. He believes it will not be long before the fort is no longer the whites' farthest outpost. True Son, however, is sullen and ungrateful toward Mr. Butler, the father he has been returned to.
