Who is John the Apostle from The Life of Our Lord and what is their importance?

John the Apostle, also known as the 'disciple who Jesus loved', does not mention his own name in his account of Jesus' life. John was present at Jesus' crucifixion, and he was charged by Jesus with Mary's care.
