The island of Vane is the novel's main setting. Vane has a small town and a small population. A church, a cemetery, and several shops are in the village. The Sunderly family arrives by mail boat. There is an archaeological excavation site on the island. There are some specific sites, including the house the Sunderly family rents during their stay and the cave where Erasmus and Faith hid the Mendacity Tree.
