Billy’s Scar represents hope in the face of hopelessness. Billy got the scar when his mother jumped from a bridge with him in her arms. She killed herself because her husband was killed in the war and she did not know how to go on without him. Despite her act of hopelessness, Billy survived and was adopted by Alice. He gave Alice, who was depressed because of the death of her infant son a reason to live.
