Charlotte Wigfall is Susan's mother. She has grown up in Antebellum times in the south and lived a gracious life. The Civil War comes along and with it the aftermath that denies her a way of life. She loses a child when she goes North and this further unhinges her. She is tempermetnal and is verbally and physically abusive, especially toward Susan, whom she had by an affair.
