Who is Wedge Antilles from The Last Command and what is their importance?

Wedge Antilles the leader of the Old Republic's famed "Rogue Squadron" with which Luke Skywalker once flew, Wedge continues to protect the New Republic fleet of capital warships, flying X-wing fighters. He is present when Bel Iblis is ambushed in the outer sectors, passes false information to Imperial Intelligence, and flies both the decoy mission to Tangrene and the real mission to Bilbringi, where he offers escort to the smuggler Aves without getting permission from Admiral Ackbar.
