The terrorist attack on the World Trade Center, as portrayed in "Doppelganger, Poltergeist," is a symbol for paranoia. The story itself is underlined by a sense of paranoia, particularly in regards to Mark’s character, as he works obsessively to prove a crackpot conspiracy surrounding the death of Elvis. This concept of paranoia is mirrored and emphasized by the inclusion of the events of September 11, one of the most historic days in United States history and an attack that spurred the war on terror, inciting paranoia amongst the masses.
