The central theme (idea) of the novel the Kite Runner is that of ethnic identity and pride. There are several characters that must deal with cultural identity and pride. Baba, with the move to America misses his home culture and has a difficult time assimilating. Amir, on the other hand, experiences culture shock, but is able to also have room in his mind and heart for his new country, and to find the same sort of pride for America as he did for Pakistan.
