The Maddens visited to help Miss Martha and assist her in her grief. Mr. Madden then called everyone together to tell them that he would be managing the estate until Master Marshall turned twenty-two, which would allow for him to finish his education and attend law school. It was also announced that Miss Martha would be going back to Williamsburg with the Maddens and admitted into a hospital. The biggest news came when Mr. Madden told Lavinia she would be going with them to Willamsburg, where she would stay with them until Miss Martha was better, Lavinia was to have a tutor and study with the Madden's daughter. She would be given every advantage to improve herself until that time her indenture was over.
