The characters in the novel speak different languages, not merely French and Creole, but language of culture that reveal their beliefs and heritage. When the plantation owner's third wife performs scenes from famous plays for the slaves, she is telling the stories of her own culture, in the manner of her culture. However, there is a deep cultural divide between the aging, failed French actress and the slaves of the plantation.
