In Upton Sinclair's The Jungle, what payment does Grandmother Majauszkiene say was not explained to the immigrants when they purchased the house?

They don't realize that when they pay the downpayment, that there will be additional monthly payments expected. The entire scam that the seller has going is that he gets huge downpayments from the immigrants, then when they don't make the first month's payment, he evicts them and takes another huge downpayment from yet another immigrant family.
