The answer to this question really depends how far into the book the reader has gone. Initially, she is not a likeable person. She is highly critical and pretentious. She is controlling and manipulative. However, when you get further into the book and learn her background and what she had to go through to get to America and rebuild her life, then the perspective shifts and we view her as an amazing testimony to the indomitable will of the human spirit.
