Ring is the protagonist of the story, "Prince Ring." He is attracted into the foggy woods (psychologically, the mysterious unconscious) by a hind with a gold ring on its antler. The hind symbolizes transformation (it was thought a deer sheds its antlers and grows more), and the ring is representative of the unified Self. Thus, Ring is the hero seeking the unified and realized Self.
