Who is The Poet from The Innocents Abroad and what is their importance?

The poet is not named, nor is he given much input in the storyline. We do learn, however, that the poet is among Twain's small group of friends. He is also discussed as one of the authorities of the written word, and he is often asked his opinion regarding facts or someone else's writing.
