Russell is the American who accompanies Glass and Marnham on their nightclub tour, an evening that eventually results in the meeting with Maria. Loud, outspoken and brash, Russell is in Marnham's mind and perspective the embodiment of everything he resents about Americans, particularly, their self-righteousness and arrogance.
