Fast's characterization of women is somewhat unique among popular writers, since his handling of female characters is much more full and sympathetic than is often the case — even though there is never a plain one among them. Although marked by sexism in their restricted lives, his women are strong and resourceful, never victims. Frequently, they function traditionally to remind men of the lost worlds of feeling and morality.
