Joseph McCarthy was a United States Senator during the 1940s and 1950s. He is described as being skilled in creating pseudo-events that shared little with the "reality" they were supposed to have been based on. Mccarthy perfected a technique of giving press conferences in the morning, so that he could announce afternoon press conferences. He also had a talent for press conferences in which no information was transmitted to the public..... something that only served to heighten public tension. Boorstin states, "Newspapermen were his most potent allies for they were his co-manufacturers of pseudo-events."
