What happens to Covenant when the Sheriff takes him home in the novel, The Illearth War?

The sheriff has been looking for Covenant and drives him partially home. When Covenant reaches his house his ex-wife calls. Covenant stands but trips on the phone cord and hits his head. Joan is asking Covenant to say something, but Covenant feels himself being carried away.
