What is the author's tone in The Iceman Cometh by Eugene O'Neill?

Each character's words and behavior suggests a different tone, ranging from morose to irritable to frenzied to sinister. The tone of the work is difficult to pin down because of all of the voices, but within all of them Eugene O'Neill's tone seems to be pitying, amused, and casual.
